The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”’  “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”  Numbers 6:22-27

This blessing is often recited at the end of a worship service and is a form of prayer. First, the prayer asks for God’s blessing. Secondly, God’s face shining on us equates to his acceptance and favor. And finally, peace is requested. The Hebrew for peace is shalom. This translation is not meant for an absence of struggle or war, but a positive state of well-being, which only comes from God.

Although this blessing was given to the Israelites, its power and purpose is still pertinent today. This prayer is for all of us.

Prayer:  Almighty and gracious God, you have blessed me and kept me safe, you have shown your favor on me with an abundance of blessings, and you have given me peace in times of struggle and hardship. I am grateful and I praise you for your undying love and commitment to me. Amen.
