In the world today, it is often difficult to find unity among groups with differing religious beliefs, political views, or family values. But unity in its simplest definition is that of coherence, a balanced integration of diverse elements into one unit. The unit can be defined as family, the workplace, community, or society as a whole. The underlying design is that all parts of the unit work toward a common goal.

Establishing unity is not an easy task. Everyone involved must be committed to the group’s mission. Even in times of disagreement, opposing opinions can be considered as the group moves toward the fulfillment of their common goal. In our families, workplaces, and communities, we can be the example of working in harmony with one another, accepting diverse opinions as possible options, acknowledging the worth and contributions of others, and being the example of Christ in our midst. Becoming a part of working toward a common goal for the greater good of everyone gives us the opportunity to bear witness to the transformative power of God, which is still present in our world today.

Prayer for the Week

God of unity and harmony, make me willing to be a part of something greater than myself. Teach me about community; and show me ways to work in unity with others, open my heart to the opinions of others, and help me to value the abilities of those around me. Empower me to be in harmony with your will in all that I do. Thank you for your unlimited mercy and grace, your never-ending faithfulness, and your immeasurable love. I pray these things in the name of Jesus, the Christ. Amen.
