Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.”   1 Chronicles 4:9

In Hebrew, the name Jabez means “he makes sorrowful.” Verse nine indicates that Jabez was born with much pain to his mother. However, having a name associated with sorrow evidently did not keep Jabez from being hopeful. Perhaps, hope was all he had.
