“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Matthew 6:12
Forgiveness lies at the core of all spiritual teaching, and this phrase is the turning point in the prayer. Jesus has so arranged this prayer that it omits nothing that is essential to our spiritual development.
Forgiveness simply means pardoning the one who has injured you. Most of us find that hard to do. But if we seek forgiveness for our own wrongdoings, how can we deny forgiveness to others? Left to our humanness, forgiveness is next to impossible. But if we ask for God’s strength and power to help us, then anything is possible.
Prayer: Holy God, help me to forgive those who have harmed me just as you have forgiven me. Amen.
