David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, Lord, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.” 2 Samuel 24:10

We all sin, and we all do foolish things. We hurt someone with our sarcasm, or our judgment, or our betrayal. None of us is exempt from falling short of the glory of God. And when we do, we feel guilty.

Guilt is a powerful motivator. It can take us from the height of our arrogance to our knees. It is only when we humble ourselves before God are we released from the guilt and shame of our shortcomings. In taking responsibility for our offenses and making amends, we are brought to wholeness through God’s love and forgiveness.

Prayer:  Almighty and merciful God, hear my plea for your mercy. I have sinned greatly, and I earnestly ask for your forgiveness. Amen.
